 Venerable Gerasimus
When the roaring began, everyone within earshot was terrified.
Everyone, that is, except the humble monk Gerasimus.  A simple man who had learned how to love all of God’s creatures by living among them as an ascetic in the wilderness, this gentle monastic cocked one ear and listened to the ferocious growling for a few moments.  Then he reassured his fellow monks in words like these: Do not be afraid.  That lion is not going to hurt anyone.  He is simply crying out because he is in terrible pain!
With that, the fearless ascetic began walking toward the fierce snarls that were emanating from a tangle of date palms, only fifty yards distant.  Wild-eyed, the other monks gaped at each other.  Had their leader taken leave of his senses?  Hardly daring to look, they waited for the ghastly attack that was certain to end the life of the pious and God-fearing abbot who had founded this community of monks in Palestine, starting around the Year of Our Lord 450.
It took the Venerable Gerasimus less than 60 seconds to reach the great cat, who was sitting on the ground and howling with anguish.  Smiling calmly, the renowned desert monk – a veteran of many years of living alone in the arid fastnesses of Egypt, before coming to Palestine – strolled up to the enormous animal and held out his right hand.  The lion blinked at him and then placed a very swollen and inflamed-looking paw into the saint’s hand.  In the middle of that injured paw, a jagged thorn protruded from the torn and suffering flesh.  Moving very slowly, the desert monk removed the offending dagger from the animal’s throbbing extremity.
From that moment forward, the lion was content to live as a mild-mannered pet at the monastery . . . while the 70 monks who shared these austere quarters on the River Jordan with their spiritual master were daily amazed by the animal’s docile, friendly nature.
For the Venerable Gerasimus, one of the most humble and self-denying monastics in the early history of the Holy Church, this incident did not seem at all unusual.
Born in the Asia Minor city of Lycia around 400 A.D., he had discovered Christianity as a boy and by the time of his adolescence had already set out to wander the Egyptian wilderness area known as the Thebaid.

More on Fasting
By Saint John Chrysostom
St. John was the Archbishop of Constantinople during the fourth century. He was fearless when denouncing sin in high places, and was a prolific writer, and bold preacher, unafraid to hit the topical issues of the day squarely between the eyes with all the subtlety of a ball peen hammer. His last words were “Glory to God for all things!” He correctly deduced the real purpose of fasting for Orthodox Christians, and on the threshold of the fast, we offer this article, originally published on Orthodoxytoday.org.
Fasting is a medicine. But medicine, as beneficial as it is, becomes useless because of the inexperience of the user. He has to know the appropriate time that the medicine should be taken and the right amount of medicine and the condition of the body which is to take it, the weather conditions and the season of the year and the appropriate diet of the sick and many other things.  READ MORE

Pray for the Reposed

by the New Hieromartyr John of Riga

The death of people who are close and dear to us is one of the most difficult trials sent to us by the Lord God during this temporary life. There are no tears more bitter than the tears of a mother for the beloved child of her heart who goes to the grave before his time. What sorrow can we compare to the sorrow of widows and orphans? Nonetheless, our Lord and Saviour turns to these people, the most unfortunate ones in the eyes of the world, saying respectfully, "Do not weep!" The Apostle Paul commands these sorrowing ones, saying, "Do not sorrow!"

What does all this mean? Of course, it does not mean that we should forget those dear loved ones of ours who have departed, that we should cast them out of our hearts. No. We should love them after their death just as we loved them in life. However, we should not sorrow over their death. Death does not separate us who are Christians from communion in love with those who are dear to us. The Lord Himself has given us the very grace-filled means needed to have communion with them. The first among these means is prayer. Prayer is the best means for spiritual communion among people who are still alive. The Apostle Paul beseeched

 FORGIVENESS
A Homily by Father Alexander Schmemann + 1983
As once more we are about to enter the Great Lent, I would like to remind us —myself first of all, and all of you my fathers, brothers, and sisters of  the verse that we just sang, one of the stichera, and that verse says: ‘ ‘Let us begin Lent, the Fast, with joy.”
Only yesterday we were commemorating Adam crying, lamenting at the gates of Paradise, and now every second line of the Triodion and the liturgical books of Great Lent will speak of repentance, acknowledging what dark and helpless lives we live, in which we sometimes are immersed. And yet, no one will prove to me that the general tonality of Great Lent is not that of a tremendous joy! Not what we call “joy” in this world — not just something entertaining, interesting, or amusing — but the deepest definition of joy, that joy of which Christ says: “no one will take away from you” Jn. 16:22 ). Why joy? What is that joy?
So many people under various influences have come to think of Lent as a kind of self-inflicted inconvenience. Very often in Lent we hear these conversations: ‘‘What do you give up for Lent?” — it goes from candy to, I don’t know what. There is the idea that if we suffer enough, if we feel the hunger enough, if we try by all kinds of strong or light ascetical tools, mainly to “suffer” and be “tortured,” so to speak, it would help us to “pay” for our absolution. But this is not our Orthodox faith. Lent is not a punishment. Lent is not a kind of painful medicine that helps only inasmuch as it is painful.

The land was parched, and the crops were dying everywhere.  Day after day and week after week, the rains would not fall from the burning sky.  At last the people of Gaza sent a deputation to the local Christian bishop, an elderly, white-bearded man named Porphyrios.
“Holy One,” they begged him in words like these, “you are our only hope!  We have offered many sacrifices to the idols; we have done everything that was asked of us by their priests.  And yet it will not rain.
“Your new religion seems strange to us, and we know little of your venerated prophet, the Great Messiah you call ‘Christ.’  But we are desperate now, and without your help we will surely die!”
The venerable bishop – the shepherd who watched over his tiny flock of Christians, here in the Gaza regions of Palestine – listened carefully to their complaints.  Then he closed his eyes and prayed for a few moments.  And when those eyes opened again, they were blazing with determination.
Quickly, the holy man explained to the struggling farmers of Gaza that they would need to do three things, in order to summon the drenching rains that might save them. TAKEN FROM

Great-martyr Photina (Photini) the Samaritan Woman and Those with her:  Sisters Photida, Phota, Paraskeva, Anatolia and Kyriake, and Sons Victor and Josiah
 February 26th

Her faith in Jesus Christ was so strong that she did not wait for Nero to summon her and punish her for preaching His Holy Gospel.

Instead, she sought him out.  And when the infamous Roman tyrant (54-68 A.D.) glared at her and demanded to know why she and several of her companions had asked to meet with him, she answered without hesitation: “We have come to teach you to believe in Christ!”
The startled Emperor, famous for his hatred of Christians and his eagerness to kill them upon the slightest provocation, could hardly believe his ears.  Amazed, he leaned forward on his throne and demanded that she identify the five women and two young men who had accompanied her to this interview.
Without objecting, she gave him the names of her five sisters (Anatolia, Phota, Photida, Paraskeva and Kyriake) and her two sons (Victor and Josiah) – all of whom, as devout Christians, were unafraid of martyrdom.  Increasingly agitated, Nero waited for her to finish with the introductions.  He was glaring even harder now, and his round face had begun to go purple – not a good sign.

“And have all of you agreed to die for this . . . this Nazarene?”
She smiled.  Her own name was Photina, and she had come from Rome by way of Carthage in northern Africa, where she and her family and friends had been preaching the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Indeed, Photini had actually been dragged to Rome by Nero’s soldiers, after they had observed her telling throngs of rapt listeners about the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, and the Last Supper, and the Three Crosses that had once stood side by side atop a hill in Palestine named Calvary.TAKEN FROM

From Bishop Kallistos Ware’s forward to the Lenten Triodion
Lent, as it exists today in the Orthodox Church, is the result of a long historical development, of which no more than a brief summary can be offered here (32). The portion of the Church’s Year covered by the Lenten Triodion falls into three periods:
(1) The Pre-Lenten Period: three preparatory Sundays (the Publican and the Pharisee; the Prodigal Son; the Last Judgment), followed by a preliminary week of partial fasting, ending with the Sunday of Forgiveness.
(2) The Forty Days of the Great Fast, beginning on Monday in the first week (or, more exactly, at Sunday Vespers on the evening before), and ending with the Ninth Hour on Friday in the sixth week.
(3) Holy and Great Week, preceded by the Saturday of Lazarus and Palm Sunday.
The third of these three periods, the Paschal fast of Holy Week, is the most ancient, for it was already in existence during the second and third centuries. The fast of forty days is mentioned in sources from the first half of the fourth century onwards. The pre-Lenten period developed latest of all: the earliest references to a preliminary week of partial fasting are in the sixth or seventh century, but the observance of the other three preparatory Sundays did not become universal in the Greek East until the tenth or eleventh century.

Martyr Pamphilus, Priest of Caesarea in Palestine
He was the greatest Biblical scholar of his era – a marvelous classical editor who knew the Holy Scriptures better than anyone else in the world of Third Century A.D. Palestine.
Because of his great skill at editing manuscripts, Pamphilus was given the supremely important task of correcting the errors in numerous copies of the New Testament.  These sacred documents were the only means of preserving the Word of God in written form, and they represented a priceless treasure for the early Holy Church.
The challenge Pamphilus faced was formidable, and involved endless hours of patient and scrupulous study in which every single word of each document had to be scrutinized with enormous care.  But this humble servant of Jesus Christ had been well prepared for the challenge, and he did not shrink from it.  For many years, he worked day and night on the manuscripts, and his contribution to the future of Christianity was immense – since these precious manuscripts would help to bring tens of thousands of converts to the Holy Church in the centuries ahead.
The gifts that this devout scholar and editor gave to the world were truly immeasurable.  And yet his earthly reward would be a grisly martyrdom in which he was arrested, interrogated, tortured and then finally beheaded at the hands of the tyrannical Firmilian, Governor of Palestine around 300 A.D.
A learned and pious man, Pamphilus was born of an aristocratic family in the ancient Phoenician city of Beirut (today part of Lebanon).  As a child, he was given the best education that money could buy, then sent off to Alexandria, Egypt – a world center of culture where some of the greatest teachers in history were then at work with their pupils.  Alexandria also featured a majestic library that held the largest collection of classical scrolls (more than 300,000 mostly Greek texts, according to scholars of the period) in the world.  As a brilliant student in Alexandria, Pamphilus studied under both the famed Pierius and the then-youthful theologian-philosopher, Origen.
After finishing his studies, Pamphilus decided to enter the Christian priesthood and was ordained in Caesarea – the great seaport city of Palestine – by Agapius, the renowned Metropolitan of that great city.  Within a few years, Pamphilus would found a great library that would combine the works of Origen and other ecclesiastical writers with many Sacred Scriptures.  Eager to contribute as much as he could to the library, Pamphilus soon began to TAKEN FROM
transcribe and correct some of the oldest copies of these priceless documents.  Soon he was being assisted by a talented disciple, the great early Church Historian Eusebius, who would one day write the biography of this humble but accomplished saint.

When the edict came down from on high – All are required to offer worship to the idols, on pain of death! – she quietly informed the Roman authorities that she could not comply.
The authorities were not pleased, to say the least.
Within a few hours, officials representing the Roman Emperor Maximian II Galerius (305-311) informed the young virgin Ennatha that if she did not immediately repudiate Christ and perform the required idol-worship, she would be burned alive at the stake.  But the faith of this young woman and Holy Martyr was so great that she was not even tempted to recant!
The brutal execution of the valorous Ennatha (also known as Constantia) took place in Caesarea, a heavily populated coastal town in Palestine, during the Year of Our Lord 308.  It was here that the young virgin was brought before the Provincial Governor Firmilian and interrogated relentlessly, as he sought to break her will and force her to engage in idolatrous worship that was anathema to her soul.
The proceedings were extremely painful.  Each time he pressed the young woman from Bethshan to submit to the Emperor’s recent declaration – All are required to offer worship to the idols! – she closed her eyes for a moment and shook her head.
Then she told the Governor that she could not engage in such practices, and for a very important reason: “I am a Christian.”TAKEN FROM
Her punishment was swift and terrible.  First the Roman soldiers stripped the young woman naked from the waist up.  Then they whipped her mercilessly, with lashes
