On the Sunday of Orthodoxy

by Fr. Alexander Schmemann
Our father, Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann, (d. 1983) was a prominent 20th century Orthodox Christian priest, theologian, and writer. He taught at St. Vladimir Theological Seminary in Crestwood, NY and at St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris, France.
His writings have been very influential in contemporary Orthodoxy, and have been translated into many languages.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Rejoicing today in the triumph of Orthodoxy on this first Sunday of Lent, we joyfully commemorate three events: one event belonging to the past; one event to the present; and one event which still belongs to the future.

More on Fasting
by St. John Chrysostom
St. John was the Archbishop of Constantinople during the fourth century. He was fearless when denouncing sin in high places, and was a prolific writer, and bold preacher, unafraid to hit the topical issues of the day squarely between the eyes with all the subtlety of a ball peen hammer. His last words were “Glory to God for all things!” He correctly deduced the real purpose of fasting for Orthodox Christians, and on the threshold of the fast, we offer this article, originally published on Orthodoxytoday.org.
Fasting is a medicine. But medicine, as beneficial as it is, becomes useless because of the inexperience of the user. He has to know the appropriate time that the medicine should be taken and the right amount of medicine and the condition of the body which is to take it, the weather conditions and the season of the year and the appropriate diet of the sick and many other things.

If any of these things are overlooked, the medicine will do more harm than good. So, if one who is going to heal the body needs so much accuracy, when we care for the soul and are concerned about healing it from bad thoughts, it is necessary to examine and observe everything with every possible detail.

Bishop Demetri
It is a great joy for me to be with all of you this weekend, because I know that the work that will be done is important and essential to the vitality of our God-protected Archdiocese.

This is a rare and special gathering of highly motivated and influential lay leaders and clergy. ……….You are here because of the depth of your faith and willingness to offer yourself to God and His Church. So I urge you: make the most of this time we have together, to share with each other your wisdom, ideas and experience, and to participate positively and productively in the development of plans for the coming year and beyond. ….. I am looking forward to hearing what you are doing in your organizations, as I visit you in your meetings tomorrow.

THE MEANING  OF  GREAT LENT
The  Holy Season of Great Lent has always been for Orthodox Christians a time of self-denial, a  period  of self-examination, a period for preparation  to enter the Holy Passion and Resurrection of  our  Saviour. But in recent years, we have seen a sad attitude take over what was once an attitude of joyful expectation and anticipation.  Instead self-denial there is now a denial of Lent. Instead of a period of preparation to enter the Holy Passion of Christ, we find the attitude that “I don’t need any preparation, I am a good person.”READ MORE

Homily on Cheesefare Sunday
Today is called "Forgiveness Sunday." It received this name from the pious Orthodox Christian custom at Vespers of asking each other's forgiveness for discourtesy and disrespect. We do so, since in the forthcoming fast we will approach the sacrament of Penance and ask the Lord to forgive our sins, which forgiveness will be granted us only if we ourselves forgive each other. "If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."(Matt. 6. 14, 15)

Our Father Among the Saints
Meletios the Great,
Archbishop of Antioch
Commemorated February 12
St Meletios was from Melitene of Armenia, and was a blameless man, just, reverent, sincere, and most gentle. Consecrated Bishop of Sebastia in 357 AD, he was later banished from his throne and departed for Beroea of Syria (this is the present day Aleppo). After the Arian bishop of Antioch had been deposed, the Orthodox and the Arians each strove to have a man of like-minded man to become the next Bishop of Antioch. Meletios was highly esteemed by all, and since the Arians believed him to share their own opinion, they had him raised to the throne of Antioch. As soon as he had taken the helm of the Church of Antioch, however, he began preaching the Son's consubstantiality with the Father. At this, the archdeacon, an Arian, put his hand over the Bishop's mouth; Meletios then extended three fingers towards the people, closed them, and

Sunday of the Last Judgment
Meatfare Sunday
When Thou shalt sit to judge the world, O Judge of All, Count me worthy of Thy summons to Thy right hand.
On this day we commemorate the inescapable second coming of Christ, ordained by the most divine Fathers to be observed after the second parable of the Prodigal, so that no one who has learned of the love of God for mankind from it will live in laziness saying, "God loves mankind, and when I am separated from Him by sin, all is prepared for my restoration."
This fearsome day of judgment has been designated for commemoration at this point in time, that through fear of death and the expectation of future torment, those who live in laziness may be encouraged to the virtues, not trusting only in the love of God, but also realizing that He is the righteous Judge who will judge all men according to their deeds. In other words those souls who have passed over are obliged to undergo judgment.

ORTHODOX LENT:
A FEAST FOR THE SOUL
"Moses was before the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread, and he did not drink water." (Exodus 24:28)
"Jesus was led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil, and fasted forty days and forty nights." (Matt. 4:1-2)
Lent, a "feast" for the soul? Ha!
This is the response of many people, as they see Lent approaching. They begin to groan and complain inwardly already feeling terribly "deprived of their hamburgers and T-Bone steaks. This is because — in our materialistic society where we have learned to identify ourselves through self-indulgence— we tend to see Lent only as a time of deprivation and penance, of not eating meat and having to attend more divine services.
But this is not at all the Orthodox view of Lent. The Lord explicitly told us not to define ourselves in terms of the body and comfort. Nor do we fast from certain foods in order to punish ourselves or in some way "atone" for our sins. On the Cross, Jesus Christ took all our sins upon Himself; therefore nothing we do can "merit" salvation and forgiveness. These have already been freely given to us by God. READ MORE
