روفائيل الانطاكي قديس أرثوذكسي أميركي

القديس روفائيل هو الأسقف الارثوذكسي الاول المكرس في العالم الجديد، ولد في بيروت في الثامن من تشرين الثاني عام 1860 من والدين ارثوذكسيين تقيين هما ميخائيل بن جرجس الهوايني، وأمه مريم كانت ابنة الخوري ابرهيم جرجورة. نتيجة للاضطهاد الذي تعرض له مسيحيو دمشق في حزيران 1860 والذي أدى الى استشهاد اربعة عشر الفاً، فر ميخائيل وزوجته الحامل مريم من دمشق الى بيروت، وفيها ابصر القديس النور

 وتعمد في 18 كانون الثاني عام 1861. تلقى علومه الابتدائية والثانوية في أبرشية دمشق ورسم قارئاً العام 1874 يوم عيد رفع الصليب المقدس. وفي عام 1879 رسمه البطريرك هيروتيوس راهباً وعينه معاوناً شخصياً له. ومن ثم ذهب الى المدرسة

اللاهوتية في خالكي تركيا عام 1879 فرسم شماساً فيها وتخرج منها عام 1886، اذ عاد

الى دمشق ليخدم الكنيسة هناك. لاحقاً تابع تحصيله العلمي اللاهوتي في مدرسة الاكاديمية اللاهوتية الامبراطورية الروسية في كييف، حيث رسم فيها كاهناً عام 1889 واشرف على الشؤون الانطاكية في البطريركية الروسية، خلفاً للارشمندريت خريستوفر جبارة، ثم رفعه مطران موسكو الى رتبة الارشمندريتية. خلال ذلك الوقت، كان المجتمع المسيحي الانطاكي العربي في الولايات المتحدة ينمو بشكل متزايد، لذلك

Today the memory of blessed Raphael hath shone on us; For having received Christ’s call, he faithfully took up his cross and followed Him becoming a fisher of men. Let us cry aloud to him saying: Rejoice O Father Raphael!


"He shall be filled with the spirit of understanding; he shall pour forth his words of wisdom and give thanks to the Lord in his prayer" (Sir 39:6).
Our holy Father Raphael was born in Syria in 1860 to pious Orthodox parents, Michael Hawaweeny and his second wife Mariam, the daughter of a priest of Damascus. The exact date of Raphael's birth is not known, but he estimated it to be on or near his Name Day, the Synaxis of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and all the Bodiless Powers of Heaven (November 8). Due to the violent persecution of Christians, at which time their parish priest, St Joseph of Damascus (July 10) and his companions were martyred, the Hawaweeny family was forced to flee to Beirut for their safety. It was here that the future saint first saw the light of day, and not in the city of his parents. Indeed, as the child's life unfolded, it was evident that he would have no continuing city in this world, but would seek the city which is to come (Heb 13:14).

SO, YOU DON’T LIKE YOUR PRIEST?

He doesn’t give good sermons? Are they too long, too short, or simply too mundane? Maybe they’re over everyone’s head. Can it be that he’s just not spiritual enough? Or perhaps he expects us to be as spiritual as he is. Does he make too many demands expecting his congregation to fast and attend all the services? He’s the priest, so he’s supposed to do the praying right? Oh, he wants control over everything? He’s full of pride. He wants to do everything himself! Or is it that he just doesn’t like women? He’s a chauvinist. He looks at women as belonging only in the kitchen! Or, maybe it’s more vague than that and you might respond, “Don’t ask me why, I just don’t like him! I don’t feel I can go to him for confession. He’s too worldly!”

1. THE SHAPE OF THE INVOCATION OF THE NAME

... And Jacob asked him and said: Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said: Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. Genesis 32:29

The invocation of the Name of Jesus can be put into many frames. It is for each person to find the form which is the most appropriate to his or her own prayer. But, whatever formula maybe used, the heart and centre of the invocation must be the Holy Name itself, the word Jesus. There resides the whole strength of the invocation.

The Name of Jesus may either be used alone or be inserted in a more or less developed phrase. In the East the commonest form is: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner." One might simply say: "Jesus Christ", or "Lord Jesus". The invocation may even be reduced to one single word "Jesus".

This last form—the Name of Jesus only—is that most ancient mould of the invocation of the Name. It is the shortest, the simplest and, as we think, the easiest. Therefore, without depreciating the other formulas, we suggest that the word "Jesus" alone should be used.

Prayer, fasting, vigils, and all other Christian practices, however good they may be in themselves, certainly do not constitute the aim of our Christian life: they are but the indispensable means of attaining that aim. For the true aim of the Christian life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit of God. As for fasts, vigils, prayer and almsgiving, and other good works done in the name of Christ, they are only the means of acquiring the Holy Spirit of God. Note well that it is only good works done in the name of Christ that bring us the fruits of the Spirit.

A chosen race, a royal priesthood

This excerpt from Saint Bede the Venerable's commentary on the first Letter of Peter (Cap 2: PL 93, 50-51), addressed to the newly baptized at Easter, tells them they are a Chosen Race, a Royal Priesthood. It is used in the Roman Office of Readings for Monday of the third week of Easter with the corresponding biblical reading taken from Revelation 7:1-17.
You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood. This praise was given long ago by Moses to the ancient people of God, and now the apostle Peter rightly gives it to the Gentiles, since they have come to believe in Christ who, as the cornerstone, has brought the nations together in the salvation that belonged to Israel.
Peter calls them a chosen race because of their faith, to distinguish them from those who by refusing to accept the living stone have themselves been rejected. They are a royal priesthood because they are united to the body of Christ, the supreme king and true priest. As sovereign he grants them his kingdom, and as high priest he washes away their sins by the offering of his blood. Peter says they are a royal priesthood; they must always remember to hope for an everlasting kingdom and to offer to God the sacrifice of a blameless life.

invulnerable, royally clothed the Church in purple with the streams of  your blood, for you are her strength, O Demetrios.

Saint Demetrios was born in Thesaloniki, Greece in 270 AD. He came from a wealthy family and because he was athletic in appearance and heroic in spirit, he became a high-ranking officer in the Roman Army at a very young age. (This is why he is depicted in Byzantine icons in military dress, either standing or riding a horse.) He considered himself a soldier of Christ first, and a military soldier second. He spent most of his time as a devout missionary, preaching the Gospel at secret meetings and converting pagans to the Christian faith.

ان المسكونة وجدتكَ مُنجداً عظيماً، في الشدائد وقاهراُ للأمم يا لابس الجهاد ديمتريوس، فكما انك حطمت تشامخ لهاوش، وفي الميدان شجَّعت نسطر. كذلك ايها القديس توسَّلْ الى المسيح الإله أن يُنعمَ بغفران الزلات لنفوسنا.

الشهيد العظيم والقديس صاحب المعجزات ديمتريوس كان مسيحياً وابن ضابط كبير في تسالونيكي في القرن الرابع الميلادي كان الابن الوحيد لوالده لذلك اعتنى بتربيته جيداً . عندما توفي والده رشحه الإمبراطور الروماني ماكسيميان خلفاً لأبيه. كان ماكسيميان معادياً للمسيحية فأوكل إلى ديمتريوس مهمة قتل المسيحيين في المدينة .

لكن ديمتريوس لم يطع الإمبراطور وبدلاً من ذلك أخذ يبشر بالمسيحية ، وعندما نما هذا إلى علم الإمبراطور غضب، وأثناء عودته من الحروب ضد السارمتيين عرّج على تسالونيكي للإطلاع على الوضع هناك حيث استدعى ديمتريوس وسأله عن عقيدته فاعترف ديمتريوس بإيمانه واشمئزازه من الوثنية، مما جعل الإمبراطور أن يأمر باقتياد ديمتريوس إلى السجن. فعرف ديمتريوس مصيره، ووزع خادمه لوبوس ثروته على الفقراءكما طلب لوبوس منه الصلاة من أجل الشاب المسيحي نسطر الذي قبل أن يتحدى المصارع العملاق لوهاوش الوثني وفي السجن ظهر ملاك الرب على ديمتريوس وقال له : " السلام عليك، رغم عذابك وتألمك، تحمل من أجل السيد المسيح، وكن قوياً وشجاعاً ".

بعد بضعة أيام أرسل الإمبراطور جنوداً إلى السجن لقتل ديمتريوس، وصل الجنود الزنزانة ووجدوا ديمتريوس يصلي فقتلوه طعناً بالحراب. أخذ المسيحيون الجسد سراً ودفنوه، وتحولت بقاياه إلى مر زكي الرائحة ومفيض الطيب وشافٍ، وبعد مدةٍ وجيزة بنيت كنيسة صغيرة على رفاته، وعندما صلى رجل نبيل اسمه ليونسيوس لرفاة القديس ديمتريوس شفي شفاءً تاماً من مرض عضال، فبنى كنيسة أكبر عوضاً عن الكنيسة القديمة.

وظهر القديس ديمتريوس في مناسبات أخرى ، عندما حاول الإمبراطور جوستينيان أخذ رفاة القديس إلى القسطنطينية حيث تصاعدت ألسنة اللهب من الضريح وصدر صوت يأمره : " اتركها لا تلمسها !" ، وبقيت الرفاة في تسالونيكي منذ ذلك الحين

ودعت الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية علما من أعلامها, رجلا من رجالاتها , فاتشحت الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية بالسواد حزنا وألما وحسرة على من كان في طليعة خدامها ومؤمنيها الأسقف الياس نجم الذي كان رئيسا لدير شفيعه مار الياس شويا،فقد غص دير مار الياس شويا بالآباء والكهنة والرهبان والراهبات وعدد كبير من أبناء الرعية وترأس الجنازة البطريرك أغناطيوس الرابع هزيم , الذي في كلمته بيّن دور الأسقف الراحل نجم في التشديد على استماع كلمة الله وبذله ذاته وحياته طعاما لخراف المسيح وممارسته خدمة العطاء والمحبة إينما ُوجد والقى صاحب الغبطة ومضة على تاريخ الراحل المملوء بالمحبة التي علمنا وطالبنا بها السيد المسيح.

فكانت أهازيج الفرح بالقيامة تملأ أرجاء الدير لحظة الوداع فبوجود المعزي ليس للحزن مكان في الكنيسة.

فمن كان له المسيح كانت له السعادة والفرح , ولهذا كانت تعزية الجميع تحية قيامة وحياة أبدية ترنم من الأعماق المسيح قام من بين الأموات ووطئ الموت بالموت ووهب الحياة للذين في القبور.

فليكن ذكره مؤبدا .

: لمحة عن حياة المطران الراحل الياس نجم

المطران الياس نجم الأرثوذكسي الإنطاكي الخادم

هو إبن الخوري الياس، ولد في إغميد ـ قضاء عاليه عام 1930، والدته مريم نجم، والوالدة والوالد من إغميد نفسها، وله شقيقان وشقيقتان. وقد تربى الأولاد الخمسة تربية مسيحية أرثوذكسية ووطنية.

تلقى الطفل الياس إبن الخوري الياس علومه الإبتدائية في مدرسة القرية، قبل أن ينتقل عام 1947 الى مدرسة دير البلمند لينهي فيها علومه الثانوية، ثم يرتسم عام 1951 شماساً انجيلياً ويلتحق في العام نفسه بمعهد خالكي للاهوت. وفي هذا المعهد نال الشماس نجم إجازة في اللاهوت عام 1958، ليسام في أيلول من العام نفسه كاهناً مع رتبة الأرشمندريتية، ويخدم في كنيسة السيدة في عاريا - قضاء بعبدا. وعام 1959 التحق برئاسة دير مار الياس شويا البطريركي حتى انتخبه المجمع الإنطاكي المقدس أسقفاً على أفاميا ومعاوناً لمطران (جبيل والبترون جبل لبنان) المثلث الرحمة المطران ايليا كرم. وظل يشغل هذا المنصب حتى شباط 1979 كان خلالها أيضاً معاوناً للمطران الجديد للأبرشية جورج خضر، علماً أنه تسلم الأبرشية لفترة انتقالية بين وفاة المطران كرم وانتخاب المطران خضر.

وفي 20 شباط 1979 عاد الى رئاسة دير مار الياس شويا البطريركي حتى وفاته في 29 أيلول 2009.

والى كل ذلك تميز الراحل بصداقات واسعة في كل الأوساط الإجتماعية والسياسية ، وكان لكلمته تأثير في أكثر من موضع، وتمتع بمحبة البطريرك اغناطيوس الرابع هزيم الذي كلفه تمثيله في مؤتمرات ومناسبات عدة في لبنان والخارج. واستطاع الراحل بعصاميته ومثابرته ونشاطه ارضاء والده الخوري الياس الذي رقد الرقدة الأخيرة قرير العين قبل سنوات معدودة عن عمر ناهز المئة، بعدما رأى الكاهن ابنه الكاهن مطراناً.

الموضوع الذي نتناوله يحمل عنوان "الحضور المسيحي في الاراضي المقدسة". وهنا يبدأ اللبس والحاجة الى إيضاحات. ماذا نعني بالاراضي المقدسة؟ عن أية أرض مقدسة نتكلم؟ لبنان هو أرض مقدسة، وفيها فلسطينيون، ومن بينهم مسيحيون. والاردن أرض مقدسة وفيها فلسطينيون، ومن بينهم الكثير من المسيحيين. وايضاً، أراضي الـ48، كما يقال، أي اسرائيل، وهي ايضاً جزء من الاراضي المقدسة. وهنالك أخيراً، الفلسطينيون في الارض المحتلة ومناطق السلطة الفلسطينية، التي ندعوها الضفة الغربية، وفيها ايضاً عدد من المسيحيين. وهكذا نرى تعقيد الوضع الفلسطيني
